On reading the above, it occurs to me that perhaps we should be rolling SPLOTs into our toolsets for research too. I can see how well the image, video and writing ones could fit with a number of citizen science / crowd sourced research activities. Streamlines the process of collection and description but still includes some moderation or simple security where required.
